White Carbon Black Main Types and Differentiation

White carbon black is mainly divided into two major categories based on production process, with significant differences in performance, application, and cost:

Precipitated Silica:

Production Process: Uses quartz sand (or sodium silicate) and soda ash (or sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, carbon dioxide) as raw materials. It undergoes steps including high-temperature melting, dissolution, precipitation reaction, filtration, washing, drying, and crushing. Simply put, it involves precipitating silica dioxide out of a silicate solution under acidic conditions.

Characteristics:

  • Larger Particle Size: Primary particles typically range from 10-40 nm (but tend to agglomerate into larger secondary particles).
  • Medium Specific Surface Area: Generally around 100-200 m²/g
  • Medium Oil Absorption: Oil absorption capacity is not as strong as fumed silica.
  • Relatively Lower Purity: May contain small amounts of impurities.
  • Lower Structure: The chain-like structures formed by particle aggregation are less developed than in fumed silica.
  • Lower Cost: It is the most widely used and highest production volume type of silica.

Fumed Silica:

Production Process: Uses silicon tetrachloride (or organosilanes, siloxanes) as raw materials. Silica micro-particles are generated by high-temperature hydrolysis in a hydrogen-oxygen flame, instantly condensing into nano-sized particles. The final product is obtained through processes of aggregation and deacidification.

Characteristics:

  • Extremely Small Particle Size: Primary particles typically range from 7-40 nm, with good dispersibility.
  • Very High Specific Surface Area: Typically between 100-400 m²/g (or even higher), which is one of the most critical indicators for distinguishing it from precipitated silica.
  • Very High Oil Absorption: Exhibits very significant thickening and thixotropic effects.
  • Very High Purity: SiO₂ content usually > 99.8%, with extremely few impurities.
  • High Structure: Particles form a well-developed three-dimensional network structure, resulting in excellent reinforcing effects.

Silica Used For Rubber Industry (Primary Application):

Tires: Serves as a key reinforcing filler for green tires, particularly precipitated silica. It significantly reduces tire rolling resistance, saves fuel, improves wet grip (anti-skid properties), and is a core material for achieving high performance and environmental friendliness in tires by replacing carbon black.

Non-Tire Rubber Products: Used in shoe soles (wear resistance, anti-slip, lightweight), hoses, tapes, seals, vibration dampeners, etc., providing reinforcement, wear resistance, and improved processing performance. Both precipitated and fumed silica are used.

Silica Used For Food Industry:

Used as an anticaking agent (e.g., in powdered foods, seasonings, milk powder to prevent caking), a flow aid, and a clarifying agent (e.g., for beer, juice filtration). White carbon black that meets food-grade standards must be used (primarily precipitated silica).
